The topic of self-driving cars has been the leading conversation for many people as of late. There is no denying that we will see the day in our lifetime that we ride in self-driving cars, it’s happening whether we like it or not.

There are several companies that will ultimately pioneer the age of self-driving cars, such as Google and eventually as reports claim, Apple. One company to come out and stun the world with plans to have self-driving cars by 2020 is Toyota. As many know, Toyota is a giant of giants in the automotive world and when they introduce something “new” it is usually accepted by others and sets a new trend. You can think of vehicles like the Toyota Prius and such. That’s a definite trend there.

Toyota has been on the move with the research of self-driving cars as have many other companies, such as General Motors, Tesla, Nissan and many others. Toyota has been in the labs cooking up something since the 1990s when it comes to self-driving cars. Toyota will be using the name Mobility Teammate Concept to refer to its approach to automated driving. The program will build a relationship between people and cars that share the same purpose, which mostly being to get from one point to another safely, effectively and efficiently.

“This approach acknowledges the utility of automated driving technologies while maintaining the fun experience of driving itself,” the company said.

Toyota is laying out their three types of intelligence that are needed to make their Mobility Teammate Concept successful. They are as follows:

  • Driving Intelligence (advanced recognition and predictive decision-making functions)
  • Connected Intelligence (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, as exemplified by the recently announced ITS Connect system)
  • Interactive Intelligence (recognition of driver status, transfer of control between driver and car, etc.)

The video below is a demonstration and presentation overlay of the automated vehicle program, Toyota Highway Teammate, in action across the globe in a broad initiate on the part of Toyota and their brands (Lexus).

The future is here, will we embrace it?
